Heart of England & Cotwold Team win the Inter-regional Championship

Held At The Ridgeway Ride, Barbury Castle - 7th to 9th August, 2009

Success for the Heart of England/Cotswold Team who were the celebrated winners of this year's Inter-Regional Team Championship. A huge vote of thanks goes to Olwen Law and Chris Hicks for their combined effort in managing the team as Chef D'Equipe and doing such a fantastic job in finding additional riders at the 11th hour when a few horses/riders had to pull out due to injury and illness. MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS to the team for their great win.

Chairmans’ Contribution
Chairman’s Report

Well, the 2008 season has come and gone. The season was not without its problems, with high fuel costs putting somewhat of a damper on proceedings. This was I suspect, one of the reasons for the reduced number of entries at most rides, and in fact the cancellation of several due to insufficient entries.
However, despite this, I hope you all had an enjoyable season and managed to achieve the targets that you had set yourselves.
On a personal note 2008 was not a very good year as a week after Cirencester I was admitted to hospital for a triple bypass operation. I was released after a week only to be re-admitted a week later suffering from bleeding stomach ulcers. These two stays in hospital gave me time to reflect upon the mortality of man (in between counting the ceiling tiles in the ward). You may wonder what on earth this has got to do with Endurance Riding. Well, for one thing, it made me think of the advancing years of some of our Ride Organisers. The team organising Wiltshire Droves and Three Rivers retired this year after a tour of duty of twenty plus years. Similarly half of the organising team at Cirencester are virtually 70 years old, with some of their helpers being older. So, if you younger members wish to see your Sport survive and grow, you need to seriously think about making plans for when they retire. Why not get involved in the organisational aspects of the Sport whilst the older, experienced members are still around?
Looking forward to 2009, what are we hoping to achieve? I can confirm, despite rumours I have heard, that Cirencester will be in the calendar and will again be hosting the Summer Solstice and FEI classes.
Heart of England has also committed to organise two new Competitive Rides, one at Cannock and one at Cosford in Shropshire. Having made this commitment it is essential that they are profitable, so please support them. If you are unable to ride, please support the Organisers and help at the ride.
We also need more social and training rides. The profit from these rides goes into the Group’s coffers and helps to fund the services that we can provide you. So if you have any ideas for such a ride let the Committee know. Do not worry if you have never organised a ride before, there are experienced organisers within the Group willing to give advice and guidance.
Also, we will also introducing a new and more user friendly web site, thus enabling us to keep you more up to date with Group activities.
I think I have rattled on enough for now, so it only needs me wish you all a Happy Christmas and a successful 2009.

Alan

END OF SEASON SOCIAL EVENING AND BRANCH MEETING
To be held at Wharton park golf club, long bank,
Bewdley, worcs DY12 2QW
On Saturday 10th January 2009.
7 pm for 7.30 start, supper to follow

This year we are off to a new venue, as unbelievably the Lyttleon Arms lost their function room
in a fire. If you have been to the Wyre Forest Training Ride, the Wharton Park Golf Club
is off to the left at the Island you come to at the top of the new Bewdley Bypass, before you head uphill
to the ride venue! Or to put it another way between Bewdley and Stourport on Severn, take the
A456, over the new river bridge, go uphill to the Island and turn left into the Golf Club Drive ,
Go past the Nursery Entrance on your right and after only 50 yards or so you will come to the
Parking area and the Golf Club.

Trophies Secretary, Karen will no doubt be contacting some of you to alert you to the fact that
you could be in line for a prize. And, those of you who were winners last year, could you please
get the trophies engraved and arrange to return them to Karen.

If you have nominated someone for a Crew or any other prize, please come along, and bring
them with you, it is so good to be able to hand out the awards at the presentation evening,
especially if the recipient is well,……. Surprised.

All are welcome to attend this event, irrespective of whether you intend to have the meal or not.
Drinks are available from The Golf Club Bar so please come along and support the group and your friends.
We will as usual hold a Raffle, and will be glad to accept donations of Raffle Prizes. There are sure to be
a couple of other games/competitions on the go, come along and join in!

Cosford Training Ride 26th October, 2008

My daughter Juliana and I thoroughly enjoyed the Cosford Ride, The going was perfect with many lovely long stretches of grass canter as well as bridleways, forest and tracks and minimal road work. A good day was enjoyed by all and the weather which, at first light was a bit overcast, turned in our favour and we even saw the sun! What a fantastic competitive ride this would be for the Heart of England Group.

The organisation was A1, there were toilets on site and a very welcome tea and food bar at the end. Cordelia from Noble Photos was clicking away well and I have two lovely photos of the ride that came yesterday. I hope everyone else has theirs, just go to her site at www.noblephotos.co.uk and you can see yourselves and fellow friends riding. Sue Evans also took some lovely photos of everyone which can be seen on the website.

My stallion Tantavitch, who is 21 coped very well with the terrain being barefoot and accompanied his mare Kate like a gentleman.

Thank you once again to Helen Watts and her Team for making such a pleasant day.

Hot off the press
Heart of England Member Camilla Mascall has just bought herself a lovely new filly foal Bordesley Golden Ayanna .
Her Gelding, Sundance, is so taken with the new arrival that he forgot to eat for half an
hour, and thinks his eyes must be deceiving him- how has a beautiful young palomino filly managed to find her way into his field?

Kizzy, on the other hand, is not so sure about having another female in the equation, so she is being a bit off-hand about it all. A bit of extra attention from Mum is needed to assure her all will be well.
Camilla and her mare Stagborough Eliza (aka Kizzy) were third in the National Kbis Pleasure Ride Trophy. We attended the awards dinner and AGM at Kegworth,. And, in typical endurance rider fashion went the wrong way up the A6 to get there! Eventually we realized we were heading the wrong way, headed back to the M1, rejoined the A6 south and in a couple of minutes were there, phew!

Prolite Back Support

I am sitting at the computer wondering what to write and how to start this article. The problem arises when I have to admit to needing support to keep my body working to complete all of the tasks I ask of it! One of the many things, which I have done this year, is join EGB with a friend, as associate members. That has meant hours of riding getting our horses and us fit enough to try and beat the clock when taking part in the training/pleasure rides. We were doing well until tackling the hills at Alwinton when I attempted to do more than a crawl coming down the hills; slipping and sliding jarred my back and I thought of defeat – back to gentle hacking only! However my friend suggested trying out a back support and as we were all enjoying the challenges we were facing in EGB (horses and riders) I decided giving my body some help which was better than giving up!
I bought a Prolite Back Support, which is strong and adjustable. Instead of ordering from the Internet I did go and try on, as the right size is essential so that it is comfortable in the riding position. As well as giving support it keeps me in a good position; when tired I was probably more likely to slouch giving me backache in the past too. Since buying the support I have worn it all of the time when riding and wouldn’t go without it, it has given me a new lease of life and confidence to improve speed and mileage! The only problem when wearing the thick elastic around your middle is that it gets very hot underneath it; be prepared to change clothes when returning from a ride!
We are now looking forward to further challenges, longer distances and quicker speeds!!
